Varese
Varese is the university's main location. It's a pretty small town with around 80.000 inhabitants, where you could find nice parks and a lot of good places for outdoor activities (when the weather allows it). It's 55 minutes away by train from Milan and a little less from Como. It's located in the Pre-Alps and this gives us a huge variety of lakes (7 within the province), a quick access to not-that-tall mountains, and a rather quick access to the Alps giants.Cost of life is pretty expensive in relation with the rest of Italy but still cheaper than the near Switzerland. Varese is in fact well linked with the Italian-speaking canton Ticino, home of nice towns where you can find a cool mix of Italian and Swiss culture. Public transportation allows people to go to almost every nice place around the city center and trains allow to go further.
Como
Located on the Italian-Swiss border, in Lombardy region, the city of Como in Italy overlooks the southwest end of its lake and is surrounded by green ridge hills, resulting in unparalleled, natural scenery. Lake Como deserves its reputation as a playground for the wealthy. Virtually deserted during the winter, the wishbone-shaped lake awakens from its slumber in mid-March when glamorous crowds begin flocking to the pretty towns clustered around its midsection: Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Varenna. Como was the birthplace of many historical figures, including the poet Caecilius mentioned by Catullus in the 1st century BCE, writers Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, Pope Innocent XI, scientist Alessandro Volta, and Cosima Liszt, second wife of Richard Wagner and long-term director of the Bayreuth Festival.
